Why toll capture isn't just a data feed
Salik in Dubai and Darb in Abu Dhabi both operate on gate-based, RFID-tag toll collection — a vehicle passes a gate, a tag is read, a charge is logged against the account the tag is registered to. For a fleet management platform to reflect that automatically, it needs to solve two separate problems, not one: getting the toll transaction data itself, and matching each transaction to the correct vehicle and the correct trip in the fleet's own records.
The first part — pulling toll transaction data — is a matter of the right integration or reconciliation process with the toll operator's own systems or exports. The second part is where it actually gets hard: a toll charge on its own just says a tag was read at a gate at a timestamp. Matching that to "which vehicle, on which job, driven by which driver" requires the platform to already know, from its own GPS and trip data, what that vehicle was doing at that exact moment — and to reconcile the two records automatically, at scale, across potentially thousands of gate passes a day for a large fleet.
What breaks when this isn't built properly
Tag-to-vehicle mismatches. Fleets reassign tags between vehicles more often than platforms account for — a tag moved from one van to another during a hardware swap, or a rental vehicle brought in temporarily, leaves toll charges attributed to the wrong asset in cost reports unless the platform's tag registry is actively maintained and synced with vehicle assignment.
Delayed reconciliation. Toll data often arrives in batches, not in real time.
